Obituary for Terrence "Terry" Belcher

Terrence Kyle (Terry) Belcher, age 62, passed away Sunday October 21 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham AL. Terry was born January 7, 1956 in West Point, NY to Kyle Nelson Belcher and Evelyn French Belcher. He grew up in Richlands, VA with his brother, Michael, at the home of their maternal grandmother, Flora Ferrell French on the banks of Big Creek in the town’s Brooklyn Addition.

Terry was a precocious young boy who grew into an exceptional football player for the Richlands High School Blue Tornadoes under Coach Jim Hammond. He was known for his grit and tenacity. He graduated in 1973 and went on to a life of adventure in the American West, living for many years in Grand Junction, Co. He returned to the south in the early 1980's and received his B.S. in finance from University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). Terry received his Master’s Degree in finance from the University of Alabama then taught finance at Auburn University. In his professional life he was known for having a brilliant mind for numbers and finance scenarios, and until his illness worked as a commercial financial appraiser for the State of Alabama. Terry loved many things in life, among them his daughters, grandchildren, Alabama football, and cooking for others. He often cooked meals for the American Legion Post 134, Homewood, AL, and was famous among his friends there for Philly cheese steaks, and “fancy” tacos. His cooking partner, Wanda Salmon, was also his beautiful and cherished friend, cared for Terry during the end of his life, and was with him when he passed.

Terry is survived by two daughters: Taryn Legvold and Marissa Belcher of Birmingham; three lovely grandchildren, Kinsley, Whitt, and Parker Legvold; mother, Evelyn Belcher, Richlands, VA; brother, Rev. Michael Belcher of Pickens SC; nephew Justin Belcher, and niece Kelsey Nolin; aunt and uncle Charlotte and Harry Robinett of Denver, NC, and aunt and uncle Sylvia and Joseph B. McGlothlin of Richlands, VA.

He was preceded in death and is now surely reunited in Heaven with his “second mother,” his beloved Mommaw Flora French who will hold him in her arms for eternity; his maternal grandfather, Charles French,; his father, Kyle Nelson Belcher, and his paternal grandparents, Anna and James Belcher.

An Alabama memorial service is being held at American Legion Post 134, at 4 Hollywood Blvd, Homewood, AL, Sat., Nov. 17th from 2-4pm.

A Virginia Memorial Service will be held in his hometown of Richlands, VA, in Dec. 2018
