Obituary for Markus "Max" Reich

Markus “Max” Reich, age 95, passed into eternal rest on Sunday, September 16, 2018. Markus was born in Bochnia, Poland on May 12, 1923 to Schlome and Malke Winzelberg.

He had two sisters, Natalka and Manya, and a brother, Izak. Markus was the last surviving member of his family as they all perished in death camps during the Holocaust. In later years Markus had vivid memories of World War II, which were by his time spent in concentration camps. He loved to tell his life story to anyone who would listen. The family is grateful for all the friends and acquaintances that gathered from time to time to share in Markus's life story.

After the war, Markus was hosted and brought to America by a sponsor family and settled in Asheville, NC in 1951. In 1953 he sent for his wife, Maria, her son Karl, and their daughter Manya. After 61 years of marriage, Maria preceeded Markus in death.

Markus is survived by his daughter, Manya Hughes (Gary) and granddaughter, Natalka Candace Crosby (Scott), and Maria’s son, Karl Wingruber, and his children, Karl, Jr., Julie (Jerry), and Joe. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Eliza and Capers Crosby, and Jacob Wingruber, Jarrod (Meagan), Michael (Hannah) Miller, and three great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, his love of animals can be honored by making donations to Chainfree Bristol, or any animal charity of your choice.

Acting on Markus’ wishes, there will not be a public viewing or funeral service.

Arrangements especially for Markus have been made through Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Virginia.
