Obituary for Joan Watson Dunham

Joan Watson Dunham, age 92, of Claypool Hill, VA, quietly passed away August 12, 2017 at Commonwealth Senior Living at Claypool Hill, Virginia. She was a member of the Cliffield Christian Church and an honorary member of the Little Valley Christian Church.

She was born in Barbour County, W. Va., November 14, 1924 and grew up in Philippi, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Dunham, her father and mother, Herman B. Watson and Katy Watson of Phillipi, W. Va. and one sister, Judy Burner of Petersburg, W. Va.

Mrs. Dunham is survived her brother, Herman B. “Jiggs” Watson of Streetsboro, Ohio. By her son, Marcus Stanley Dunham, III and wife Kim Herndon Dunham of Saltville, Va. and daughter Mary Kay Crabtree and husband Kenneth Frost Crabtree of Richlands, Va. Two Grandchildren, Marcus Stanley Dunham, IV and wife Vanessa Clevinger Dunham of Honaker, Va. and Karlee McGuire Theissen and her husband T. J. Theissen of Woodbridge, Va. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter, Charleigh Irene Dunham also of Honaker, Va.

Mrs. Dunham was a former business teacher at Rich Valley High School in Smyth County, Virginia. After moving to Tazewell County she began working at the Virginia Employment Commission and served in that capacity for twenty-four years before retiring. Mrs. Dunham was a graduate of Philippi High School and was a majorette in the marching band. She began working at the Philippi bank immediately after high school. She was active in the local horse show circuit for many years and an avid bridge player. In later years she collected and sold antiques in the Richlands and Abingdon areas. Her ability as a seamstress allowed her many opportunities to create clothing designs and riding habits for horse showing.

A brief remembrance of her life for Mrs. Joan Dunham will be conducted at 2:00 pm Tuesday August 15, 2017 at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with Rev. Stan Dunham officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, VA. Honorary people of special mention are the members of the Rich Valley High School Alumni Organization, Tommy and Laura Addison, Jane Smith, Russell Lee and Judy Herndon, Carmen Bennett, Tom Bise, Raymond and Janavee Buchanan, Barbara Baxter and Don Bates, Pat and Steve Joyce.
