Obituary for Fred D. Smith

Mr. Fred D. Smith, age 99, of Swords Creek, VA passed away Saturday May 19, 2018 in a Abingdon, VA hospital following an extended illness. He was born on August 3, 1918 at Raven, VA to the late Henry & Elsie Sutherland Smith. He was a U.S. Marine Corps WW II Veteran and retired conductor from Norfolk Southern Railroad with 44 years of service. He got saved at Swords Creek Block Church and attended Pisgah Holiness Church. Fred loved to hunt, fish and riding horses. He enjoyed walking and being outdoors.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years Lula Cline Smith; one brother Danny Smith; three sisters Dorothy Shrader, Clara Evans and Pauline Putnam and a daughter in law Jewel Northern.

Mr. Smith is survived by four sons, Larry Northern & fiancée Dorothy Whited of Lebanon, VA; Donnie Smith & wife Mary of Richlands, VA; Freddie Smith & wife Bonnie of Woodstock, VA and Frank Smith and wife Liz of Olathe, Kansas; two sisters June Hale of Virginia Beach, VA and Joann Stiltner of Doran, VA; Special Friend Bessie Richardson; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, 2 step great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

The Family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, VA from 6-9 P.M. Monday May 21, 2018. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday with Pastor Mike Altizer officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be Chuck Dye, Paul Herndon, David Dye, Melvin Dowdy, James Davis, Wayne Monk, Mike Vance and Ronnie Osborne. Honorary Pallbearers will be Grandsons, Men of the Swords Creek Block Church and Pisgah Holiness Church and all of his many friends. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by Casey-Short Post 9640.
